Michael Williams has nearly two decades of experience in business advocacy and strategic communication as well as federal and state government service. He is currently head of the Williams Group, a public policy and communications consulting firm specializing in government relations, public affairs and corporate business development services. The Williams Group specializes in the development and implementation of advocacy and communication strategies relating to a host of issues, including financial markets, tax, international trade, energy and natural resources.
Before founding The Williams Group, Mr. Williams was a managing director of Credit Suisse in the Washington-based Public Policy Americas division. He was responsible for maintaining and expanding the bank’s relationships with Members and staff of the congressional tax-writing committees and other committees, including House Financial Services, Senate Banking and Senate Foreign Relations. Mr. Williams was directly involved in the formulation and implementation of the bank’s legislative and regulatory policies and strategies. He was also involved in the management of the Americas region, serving on the CEO and COO Management Committees as well as the Regional Reputational Risk Committee.
Mr. Williams previously served as senior vice president of The Bond Market Association and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. He represented the association’s views to various congressional committee and federal regulators.
Mr. Williams served as special assistant to the President and staff director for Legislative Affairs during the Clinton Administration, where he was a key member of the White House team responsible for developing and implementing the Administration’s agenda on financial services, tax and international trade legislation. He also served as a Deputy Assistant for Congressional Affairs at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative during the Clinton Administration.
Before his tenure in Washington, he served in various senior roles in the New York State Assembly and Senate as well as the Administration of Gov. Mario Cuomo. He focused primarily on tax, budget and financial services issues during his time in Albany.
Mr. Williams holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Master in Public Administration from the State University of New York at Albany. He also holds a Master in Business Administration from the University of Maryland.
